Growing Musicians at Every Level: Music at Carolus Online Academy

Stories & Spotlights

At Carolus Online Academy, music education is more than an elective, it’s an opportunity for students to develop creativity, confidence, and critical thinking skills across grade levels. From elementary through high school, our music program is intentionally designed to grow with our students.

K–8: Building Strong Musical Foundations

Under the leadership of April Elder, COA offers sequential music courses for students in grades K–8. Each grade level builds upon the last, creating a structured progression that strengthens both music literacy and performance skills.

Students learn how to:

  • Read and interpret music
  • Understand foundational music theory concepts
  • Explore music history
  • Apply age-appropriate musical techniques

Our curriculum introduces increasingly rigorous material as students advance, often offering a deeper sequence than many traditional public schools. This allows students to access challenging content while developing a strong and confident understanding of music.

Looking ahead, April hopes to expand opportunities for performance by organizing schoolwide events such as a Fall Fest and Winter Fest, where students of all ages can come together to showcase their talents and celebrate their love of music as a community.

High School: Understanding, Creating, and Composing

At the high school level, under the guidance of Heather Fultz, students take Music Appreciation: a course that blends history, theory, and creativity.

Students explore:

  • The evolution of music throughout history
  • The cultural purpose and development of music
  • Basic music theory
  • Composition techniques

By the end of the year, students are able to write short musical compositions using a variety of music-notation platforms. They also engage in thoughtful discussions about how music reflects the values, struggles, and creativity of different time periods. This course not only builds musical knowledge but also encourages critical thinking and creative expression.

Student Spotlight Opportunity

COA’s music program continues to inspire talented students across grade levels. One recent standout student, Khylie F., demonstrated exceptional creativity and skill in composition. Featuring her work or interviewing her about her musical journey could offer a powerful, student-centered perspective on how our music program fosters both talent and confidence.

More Than a Course — A Community

Whether students are just learning to read music in elementary school or composing original pieces in high school, COA’s music program nurtures growth, creativity, and connection.

As we continue expanding performance opportunities and celebrating student talent, we remain committed to ensuring that every student has a space to discover and develop their musical voice.
