Celebrating February: A Month of Learning and Growth at Carolus Online Academy

February is a month filled with important observances that can bring our school community together in meaningful ways. At COA, we believe in the power of education to inspire, motivate, and celebrate every student. This month, we’re embracing several key themes that reflect the diversity of our students’ interests, histories, and futures. Here are a few simple yet impactful ways we can all come together to celebrate Black History Month, Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, National School Counseling Week, and American Heart Month:

1. Honoring Black History Month

February is a time to celebrate the history, achievements, and contributions of African Americans. At COA, we’re committed to educating our students about the important role that Black leaders, artists, and innovators have played throughout history. Here are a few ways to celebrate:

  • Daily Black History Facts: Each day, students and teachers can share a brief fact about a notable African American figure, artist, or historical moment in our virtual school forum or during class meetings.
  • Virtual Field Trips: Explore online museums or virtual tours that focus on African American history, such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
  • Student-Led Projects: Encourage students to create projects that highlight African American culture, history, or contributions to various fields. These could be presented as videos, digital posters, or essays.

2. Recognizing Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month

February is also CTE Month, a time to recognize the value of career and technical education. Our students are learning skills that will help them thrive in the workforce, and we want to celebrate their accomplishments:

  • Virtual Career Day: Host a virtual career day where industry professionals from various fields (engineering, health care, technology, etc.) can share their experiences and offer advice to students considering different career paths.
  • CTE Workshops: Organize virtual workshops or webinars where students can learn about specific career fields, certifications, and skills required for success in those areas.
  • Student Spotlights: Showcase students who are excelling in CTE programs, sharing their stories and the projects they’ve worked on through blogs or short videos.

3. Celebrating National School Counseling Week

National School Counseling Week, held the first week of February, is a great opportunity to highlight the essential role of our school counselors in supporting student well-being and academic success. Here are some ways to show our appreciation:

  • Thank-You Notes to Counselors: Encourage students to write thank-you notes or create digital cards for their school counselors, recognizing the support they receive throughout the year.
  • Wellness Workshops: Organize workshops on topics such as stress management and goal setting. Counselors can lead these sessions, offering valuable tools for students’ mental health.
  • Virtual Office Hours: Provide students with extra opportunities to meet with counselors virtually to discuss academic concerns or personal goals.

4. Promoting American Heart Month

February is also American Heart Month, which serves as a reminder to take care of our heart health. We can use this month as an opportunity to encourage healthy habits:

  • Heart-Healthy Challenges: Organize a virtual fitness challenge for students and staff.   This could include creating a weekly challenge where participants aim to reach a certain number of steps to encourage more cardiovascular activity.
  • Educational Activities: Provide resources and activities about heart health and healthy eating. Students can participate in interactive lessons, quizzes, or even cook healthy recipes at home and share their experiences online.
