Carolus Online Academy Celebrates One Year of Carolus Cares: Project Give Back

Stories & Spotlights

While many families are preparing for the first day of school, Carolus Online Academy (COA) was also focused on ensuring every student had what they needed to start the year strong, regardless of circumstance.

In August, COA marked the first anniversary of its community impact program, ‘Carolus Cares: Project Give Back,’ with a free back-to-school kickoff event in Columbia.

With 60% of South Carolina’s student population living in poverty, and 84% of the school’s student population classified as economically disadvantaged, this program continues to meet a critical need. Through four free shopping events across the state last school year, this initiative supplied food, clothing, toys, school supplies, and more to students.

Giving Back, Building Up

The free, community event brought this mission to life once again. The back-to-school kickoff invited families to “shop” at no cost for gently used clothing, home goods, school supplies, books, and more. Beyond the items, it was about something even bigger: kindness and connection.

“One year ago, we created Carolus Cares to give our families and the community an opportunity to shop for free with gently used or donated items. It fills my heart with so much joy to see families and our staff be a part of this mission that is our vision,” said Pam Sieger, executive director at COA.

This year’s event brought together 132 students, parents, teachers, and community members, each contributing to a day that was as special as it was impactful. Teachers showed up in force, helping families find what they needed and ensuring students felt seen and supported.

Our Mission

As we step into a new school year, we’re reminded that education isn’t just about books and lessons, it’s about community, compassion, and creating opportunities for every child to succeed.

Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and joined us for this milestone event. Together, we’re building more than school readiness, we’re building hope. If this is a community that your family wants to be a part of, learn more today at coa.k12.com.
