How Carolus Online Academy Helped One Family Thrive

For Evonne, finding the right educational environment for her children wasn’t just about academics – it was about ensuring they had the support and opportunities they needed to succeed. 

Her son, James, now entering third grade, and daughter, Amya, entering second grade, have been students at Carolus Online Academy (COA) for two years. What began as a solution to help James manage a chronic health condition has become a positive experience for the entire family.

James lives with sickle cell disease, which can require frequent hospital stays and medical appointments, especially during the winter months. Before enrolling at COA, missed school days made it difficult to stay on track. 

“With online school, we can keep up with everything,” Evonne said. “If James is feeling well, we’re able to work ahead. If he’s in the hospital, his teachers understand and help us stay connected.” 

That support has made a significant difference. According to Evonne, James has not only maintained his grades but has exceeded expectations academically. 

“He tells me all the time, ‘Mom, I’m learning more now than I ever did before,'” she said. 

Reaching New Heights Academically 

One of the biggest surprises has been James’ growth in math. 

During his second-grade year, James earned one of the highest scores in his class and received a Master of Math award. Even with the challenges of managing his health, he continued to excel. 

“When his teacher told me he was performing on a third-grade level in math, I couldn’t believe it,” Evonne said. “I was so proud of him.” 

James has become increasingly independent with his schoolwork and enjoys learning new concepts. His enthusiasm is evident – even on weekends. 

“He’ll ask, ‘Mom, do I have school today?’ He loves seeing his teachers and being in class.” 

Building Confidence … and Connections 

While James shines in math, Amya has developed a love of reading and storytelling. According to her mother, she enjoys chapter books and often impresses her teachers with how well she remembers and retells stories. 

“If someone asks her one question about a book, she’ll tell you the whole story from beginning to end,” Evonne laughed. 

Beyond academics, Amya has also formed meaningful friendships through COA, including a close friend she met in kindergarten. The two have remained connected and have even met in person. 

Looking Toward the Future 

Today, both students are thriving and dreaming big. James talks about becoming a firefighter or truck driver someday, while Amya hopes to be a teacher, lawyer, cheerleader, or gymnast. 

For Evonne, seeing her children excited about learning is the greatest reward. 

“I’ve got two scholars,” she said proudly. “They’ve both grown so much, and COA has been a wonderful fit for our family.”
