Finding Her Voice: How One Student is Thriving at Carolus Online Academy

Stories & Spotlights

For 10th grader Jaya, education is about more than grades – it’s about finding an environment where she feels supported, encouraged and empowered to succeed.

After attending traditional public school and briefly trying private school, Jaya and her family decided it was time for a different path. Today, she’s thriving at Carolus Online Academy (COA), where she has found confidence in herself and her future.

“The teachers are nice, and the administration is always here to help,” Jaya shared. “I always feel like there’s somebody there to help me if I need it.”

Discovering a Passion for Learning

English is Jaya’s favorite subject, especially persuasive and argumentative writing. She enjoys crafting thoughtful arguments and expressing herself through words – skills that will serve her well in the future.

That future may include medicine. Inspired by family members who work in healthcare and her own desire to help others, Jaya hopes to attend nursing school after graduation and potentially continue to medical school one day.

“I’m always wanting to help people, so I thought that would be the right career field for me.”

Her dedication is already evident. Jaya is a member of the National Honor Society and balances honors coursework alongside a part-time job, where she was hired at just 14 years old. According to her mother, she has already been preparing for a future leadership role within the company.

“She’s paying for her own braces, managing school, working, and preparing to get her driver’s license,” her mom proudly shared. “She’s taught herself responsibility at such a young age.”

Growing in Confidence

Jaya says one of the biggest lessons she has learned through online learning is time management. Balancing school, work, and personal responsibilities has helped her become more organized and intentional with her time.

Outside the classroom, she enjoys drawing, listening to R&B music, and making handmade bracelets with glass beads and charms – a hobby she once turned into a small business.

Although she admits she can be shy in large groups, Jaya has built meaningful connections through her classes, especially in English class, where discussions and collaboration are encouraged.

A Story of Strength

Jaya’s story is also one of resilience. Born prematurely at just 32 weeks and weighing only two pounds, nine ounces, she has continually overcome challenges and exceeded expectations.

Today, her teachers describe her as someone who “brightens up a classroom,” welcomes others, and “goes the extra mile to be successful.”

At Carolus Online Academy, Jaya has found a place where she feels seen, supported, and inspired to keep reaching for her goals – and her future is only getting brighter.
