How One Student Finds Balance Through Virtual Learning
When Mahogany enrolled at Carolus Online Academy, she discovered that virtual learning was more than a new educational environment – it was a pathway to both academic achievement and creative growth.
After spending time in both traditional public school and online learning, Mahogany realized that virtual school gave her the structure and flexibility she needed to succeed.
“In public school, I used to get distracted a lot,” she shared. “A lot of stuff was happening, and it was too much for me to deal with.”
Her mother decided it was time for a change, and the impact was almost immediate.
“After I went to online school, my grades got better,” Mahogany said. “I stopped getting distracted more, and I started doing things that would help me become a better person.”
Growing in Confidence and Independence
With a more flexible schedule and fewer distractions, Mahogany found herself developing new routines and responsibilities outside of school as well.
“Now I clean the house a lot, I cook, and I take care of my dog,” she said. “I’m still able to balance all of that while having a social life.”
She says virtual learning has helped her become more independent and confident in herself. Having a schedule that works for her learning style has made a major difference.
“Normally, when I get up too early, it’s not the best for me,” she explained. “Now I have a good schedule. Waking up at 8 and finishing at 12 is perfect for me.”
The flexibility of online school also allows her to make time for the things she enjoys most after classes are finished each day.
Exploring Creative – and Career – Passions
One of Mahogany’s favorite classes this year has been photography, a subject she hopes to continue studying in college.
“I want to go to college for photography,” she said. “If I can major in that, that’s something I would want to do.”
Her favorite photography subject? Her Yorkie, Buster.
“When he’s sitting in the sunlight, he looks so cute in pictures,” she laughed.
Mahogany has also discovered an interest in cybersecurity after taking the course during the first semester.
“The more I started getting into it, the more I realized I really liked doing this,” she said. “I think this is something I really want to do in my future.”
Outside of school, Mahogany enjoys baking, drawing and even learning tattoo artistry as a potential way to support herself while in college.
Looking Ahead to the Future
As she prepares for her senior year, Mahogany already has big plans for the future, including applying to several colleges – with Spelman College at the top of her list.
She also hopes her story encourages other students who may be considering virtual learning.
“Don’t be nervous,” she said. “The teachers are really nice and really helpful. Online school can be really good for you if you have hobbies or other things you want time for.”
For Mahogany, Carolus has provided the balance and support she needed to thrive – both inside and outside the classroom.
