COA Students Explore History at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

Stories & Spotlights
online school field trips

Over Spring Break, Carolus Online Academy students and families had the incredible opportunity to step outside the virtual classroom and into history during our field trip to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Charleston, South Carolina.

Located along the beautiful Charleston Harbor, Patriots Point is a nationally recognized destination dedicated to preserving and sharing America’s rich military and maritime history. Since its establishment in the 1970s, the museum has grown into one of South Carolina’s most popular attractions, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

A Hands-On Learning Experience

Our COA families explored the iconic USS Yorktown, a World War II aircraft carrier that serves as the centerpiece of the museum. Walking through the ship gave students a powerful, real-world glimpse into the lives of those who served and the history they helped shape.

Beyond the Yorktown, students had the chance to experience:

· A fleet of historic naval ships recognized as National Historic Landmarks

· The Vietnam Experience Exhibit, the only one of its kind in the United States

· The Cold War Memorial

· Exhibits honoring recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor

Each stop along the way provided meaningful opportunities for students to connect what they’ve learned in class to real-life history—bringing lessons to life in a memorable and engaging way.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Patriots Point is known for its strong educational programs, serving tens of thousands of students each year through immersive learning experiences. Our visit reflected that same mission—giving COA students a chance to explore, ask questions, and deepen their understanding of history in an interactive environment.

This field trip was designed as a self-guided experience, allowing families to move at their own pace while connecting with other COA students along the way. It was a wonderful opportunity to build community, make new friends, and share a unique educational adventure.

Building Community Through Experiences

At Carolus Online Academy, we believe learning doesn’t just happen online, it happens everywhere. Events like this give our families the chance to come together, explore new places, and create lasting memories.

We loved seeing our Phoenix families exploring the decks of the Yorktown, participating in scavenger hunts, and engaging with history firsthand.
