Building Confidence in Online Math: Meet Heather Evans, COA 8th-grade Math Teacher

Stories & Spotlights
COA staff members

When Heather Evans, an 8th-grade math teacher and Middle School Team Lead at Carolus Online Academy (COA), joined the school, she already knew virtual learning could change students’ lives. She had previously taught online at a virtual charter school in Arizona,  working from her home in South Carolina.

“I actually joined COA in February of that first year,” Evans said. “I was excited to continue in virtual education because I’d already seen how successful it can be for students.”

Leading With Support – For Teachers and Students

As Middle School Team Lead, Evans wears many hats by supporting both educators and operations.

Her role spans:

  • Supporting 8th-grade teachers
  • Serving as math/science content lead
  • Identifying solutions for challenges schoolwide
  • Making sure communication flows between leadership and staff

“We meet with leadership weekly, bring problems and solutions, and ensure things get implemented. It’s a lot – but I love it.”

Making Virtual Math Come Alive

One thing is obvious: Evans doesn’t believe in boring math.

“I teach more through discussion than lecture,” she explained. “I might write on the board, but the students are telling me the steps, the calculations, and the why behind everything.”

Whether it’s doing math problems directly on a virtual whiteboard or battling for bragging rights during interactive review games, Evans always keeps her students engaged.

Her strategies include:

  • Calling on student volunteers to solve problems live
  • Using chat as an active discussion space
  • Competitive review tools like “Wayground” (formerly Quizizz)
  • Humor, which is especially important with middle school energy

“Today, one student told me, ‘Ms. Evans, you’re funny.’ I said, ‘I try, math is boring if we’re not funny!’”

Keeping Students on Track

For students who need extra guidance, Evans makes sure help is always within reach.

“We have office hours every Friday. Students can pop in anytime to ask questions,” she shared. “But I ask them to come prepared – to think critically, attempt the work first, and bring specific questions.”

And if a student needs more?

“This year, COA has partnered with Sylvan Learning. Families can access free tutoring – online or in-person. It’s amazing, especially for families who otherwise couldn’t afford it.”

Why Students Thrive Online

For many students, the virtual classroom setting is life-changing.

“It’s quieter. They avoid the distractions they struggled with in the classroom,” Evans said. “I hear often: ‘I have no distractions. I can concentrate here.’”

She’s especially seen the impact on neurodivergent students.

“We have a good number of students with autism this year – and they love the online setting. They’re comfortable at home. It supports focus and reduces overstimulation.”

Evans also loves that every teaching tool – from her handwritten digital notes to videos can be saved and rewatched anytime.

“In a traditional classroom, once the lesson is over, it’s gone. Here, they can revisit anything they need to better understand it.”

A Well-Deserved Honor: The Superintendent’s Challenge Coin

This school year, Evans was awarded the Superintendent’s Challenge Coin – presented by Chris Neeley of the South Carolina Public Charter School District.

The tradition of challenge coins goes back to ancient Rome and later the U.S. military in recognizing those who demonstrate:

  • Courage
  • Integrity
  • Service to others
  • Outstanding achievement

The district continues that tradition by honoring individuals who make a meaningful impact on student success.

Heather Evans is one of them.

“Heather sees the best in her students – and helps them see it in themselves,”
said Pam Sieger, Executive Director at Carolus Online Academy Leadership.

The Heart of an Engaged School Community

Whether she’s mentoring educators, empowering students in algebra, or building joy in learning, Evans brings unwavering positivity to Carolus Online Academy.

“Our students are still learning the same content – but they get to do it in a way that works for them,” she said. “That’s what virtual learning is all about.”
