How Khylie Found Her Rhythm at COA

Stories & Spotlights
From Classroom to Composition: Khylie's Story

For Khylie, a 10th-grade student at Carolus Online Academy (COA), learning hasn’t followed a traditional path – but that’s exactly what’s helped her grow. Khylie has experienced a mix of public school, homeschooling, and now virtual learning, each shaping her journey in different ways.

“I started at COA in the 2024–2025 school year,” she shared. “Before that, I did a homeschool-type online program, and before that I was in a traditional school.”

A Learning Environment that Supports Well-Being

Khylie’s transition to virtual learning was influenced by challenges that occurred during the pandemic. Like many students, she found that the traditional classroom environment could feel overwhelming at times.

“I had panic attacks,” Khylie explained. “That’s why I do online now.”

The structure of COA has also made a difference in her day-to-day experience.

Creativity in the Classroom – and Beyond

Khylie’s favorite subjects, science and music, reflect both her curiosity and her creativity. While academics are important, it’s her passion for music that truly stands out.

“Probably something music-related,” she said when asked about her future. “I like making music.”

Using online tools like UltraBox, Khylie composes electronic music, experimenting with different time signatures, sounds, and structures. What started as curiosity quickly turned into an impressive creative outlet.

“I figured out the basics on another program first,” she explained. “Then I tried UltraBox again, and now it is the main thing I use.”

She is very dedicated to music – Khylie has already created and released more than 160 songs.

An Artist at Heart

Music isn’t Khylie’s only creative outlet. She also enjoys drawing, storytelling, and exploring animation. From designing album covers to sketching imaginative characters – like a “kiwi fruit that’s also a kiwi bird” – her creativity extends across multiple mediums.

“I draw. I make stories… I’ve been trying to get back into animation,” she shared.

Looking Ahead

Although she’s still exploring what the future holds, Khylie’s passion for music and creativity is clear. With the flexibility and support of Carolus Online Academy, she’s been able to build a learning experience that works for her – one that prioritizes both her well-being and her interests.

And while her path may look a little different, Khylie is proving that success doesn’t have to follow a single track – it can be composed, one note at a time.
