Ms. Laura Randolph Named K-8 Teacher of the Year
When Ms. Laura Randolph (“Ms. Laura”) retired from teaching after 30 years in South Carolina classrooms, she thought her teaching journey was over. But a few months later, a new opportunity opened at Carolus Online Academy (COA).
“I didn’t think I would teach again,” she shared. “I was working at an assisted living home as the activity coordinator, and I loved it. But I missed the kids. I missed teaching. This all just fell into place at the right time.”
Ms. Laura joined COA in 2024, bringing her experience and enthusiasm for learning new approaches along with her. What started as a fresh challenge quickly became a passion.
Building Connections in a Virtual Space
Like many teachers transitioning to virtual education, Ms. Laura wondered if she’d be able to connect with her students through a screen. The reality, she says, has exceeded every expectation.
“I was worried that I wouldn’t feel the same team-family feeling that I had in the classroom,” she explained. “But instead, I’ve built bonds that are stronger in this environment than I did before. The computer screen is definitely not a hindrance. If anything, I think it helps.”
Her students agree. Some of her favorite classroom moments come from small interactions: students proudly showing her their toys, asking to stay after class just to talk with friends, or encouraging one another in the chat. “These kids become almost family-like,” she said. “They really want that connection.”
Introducing Physical Education … Online
Ms. Laura currently teaches K–8 Physical Education and middle school health. She also serves as a lead mentor teacher and Title VII and IX coordinator.
“A lot of people ask, ‘How do you teach PE virtually,’” she said with a laugh. “But you can! I’ve even run a school-wide virtual field day. It just requires creativity.”
From cardio drumming with couch cushions and wooden spoons, to scavenger hunts that get kids moving through their homes, to simple desk exercises, Ms. Laura designs lessons that are accessible to every student.
“I’ve always believed in meeting students where they are,” she explained. “Not every student comes in ready to run a mile. For some, success is just building up by walking it. My goal is to make sure every child feels safe, challenged, and capable of doing their best.”
A Steady Presence for Her Students
For many COA students, Ms. Laura is more than a teacher – she’s someone they can count on. She recalls one moment when a student grew anxious when hearing she would be absent for a doctor’s appointment.
“He got quiet and said, ‘You’re not coming back, are you,’” she remembered. “It broke my heart. Their last teacher had left suddenly and never said goodbye. I promised them I would be there on Monday – and I was. That moment reminded me that these kids need consistency. They need to know we’re not going anywhere.”
Honored to Be Teacher of the Year
Being named K–8 Teacher of the Year is a recognition Ms. Laura is proud of, but she credits her students for inspiring her daily.
“They are the reason I do this,” she said. “I want them to know they’re capable, they’re valued, and they’re not alone. If I can show them that – even through a screen – then I’ve done my job.”
